Chanta

Last updated: 2026-08-18

Chanta requires every meld and the pair to contain a 1, 9, or honor, with at least one honor in the hand. 2 han closed; 1 han open. Opposes Tanyao. See Riichi Mahjong Yaku Guide.

Requirements

  • Four melds + pair; each group contains a terminal (1, 9) or honor
  • Hand must include at least one honor (all terminals, no honors → junchan, higher han — not in this batch)
  • 2 han closed; 1 han open

Valid example

Each sequence contains 1 or 9; south pair (z2) adds an honor — chanta (2 han closed).

Invalid or confusing

No honors; every group has 1/9 — junchan (3 han) + pinfu, not chanta (chanta requires an honor).

Stacking and open hands

Open play loses 1 han. Can stack with pinfu, yakuhai, etc. Opposite route from tanyao — terminal-heavy play.

Scoring

Fu follows normal rules; with pinfu, watch the wait. See Fu Calculation Basics.
