Sanshoku

Last updated: 2026-08-18

Sanshoku requires one sequence in each suit with the same starting rank (e.g. all 123). 2 han closed; 1 han open. See Riichi Mahjong Yaku Guide.

Requirements

  • One sequence in each of man, pin, and sou with the same start rank (e.g. m123, p123, s123)
  • 2 han closed; 1 han open (kuisagari)
  • Stacks with tanyao, pinfu, etc.

Sanshoku doukou is three triplets of the same rank across suits — different yaku; not covered in this batch.

Valid example

Man, pin, and sou each have 123 — sanshoku (2 han closed). Also man 456 sequence and white pair.

Invalid or confusing

Man 123·456·789 is Ittsu (vertical in one suit), not sanshoku (horizontal across three suits).

Stacking and open hands

Open play loses 1 han. Often stacks with tanyao and pinfu. Building three matching sequences at once is structurally demanding.

Scoring

Han follows closed/open; fu follows normal rules. With pinfu, pair and wait still matter for fu. See Fu Calculation Basics.
